canario

/ with Marion Jdanoff

The Canary Islands are a territory which cannot be easily determined.
They are part of Europe but lost in the Atlantic Ocean near the coast of Africa.
They have a hybrid nature both in topography and culture.
Ancient traditions coexist with mass tourism, the real with the fake, deserts with primary forests, hippies with retirees with surfers with lgbt people from all over Europe.
They host huge and long-lasting carnivals in almost every town, where cross-dressing and gender fluidity is the norm.

The Canary Islands seem to contain an essential instability due to their volcanic geology.

They are like a utopian archipelago that is perpetually undefined, passing through an endless circle of trial, errors & experimentations.
It feels strange there, in a good way. Like walking on queer grounds.
